Difference between "log in" and "login"?

I work with the Internet at work and I've come across this often. I think the "log in" is a verb, an action, such as "Yesterday I wanted access to the interface", while "login" is a noun, one, as in "Yesterday I could not access the login page." Is that correct? The reason I ask is that I have seen people use to log on as a noun and a verb and both also record. What do you think? Or does it matter? I think the main thing that worries me is consistency.

I think that matters, and you're right. "Log" is a verb, as in "Please log in." "Login" is a noun and refers to a user name, password, or a combination of both, as in "Use your user name to access the site."
