State taxes for two states?
Ive always done my own taxes, mine are simple for now as I have nothing to claim. No kids, dont own my home. My friend asked me to do hers for her, and I dont mind its pretty simple. My question is, she lived in MD half of 2008 then moved to PA for the other half, and still currently lives there and had a job in PA. So my question is, ive done some research and just want to confirm, I fill out ONE federal form for both jobs, the MD and PA job and attach each federal w2 statement to it. And for the state I fill out a MD state tax form for JUST her MD job and attach only her MD job w2, and fill out a PA state form for Just her PA job and attatch only her PA w2 correct? And please DONT answer me if you have no clue what your talking about, only serious answers from people who KNOW for a fact. Thanks!
You are correct, sort of. I am not 100% certain about the exact returns for PA and MD but when you spend a partial year in a state you have to file what is known as a partial year return. The info should flow from the federal return, however it needs to be apportioned so that only the income from PA will be taxable to PA and the same for MD.
