Kids Jobs Under 10
Get Britain Working: Give kids £97.10 a week?
So I was just reading about the Conservative plan to Get Britain Working and how they’re going to target the long term unemployed and people that have actually never had a job. What about kids under 24 that I know who get nearly a £100 per week for doing nothing? Is that more than what an adult would get?
I work in a local council drop in centre that helps youths and we had a smartly dressed young man in who had hearing aids in both ears and was very nice to talk to. He said he was having problems with his benefits because he didn’t know if he was getting the right amount because he was getting £97.10 a week and didn’t want to be overclaiming as everyone else his age that he knew only got £50.95, what’s going on?
The current benefit system is so convoluted that half the time the staff supposed to administer it do not understand it.
A typical example was the Tax Credit scandal. People who had correctly, fully and truthfully filled in the claim form were then paid benefit. It turned out that the sums had been wrongly done, and the families had received more than they should.
The authorities demanded immediate repayment, even though the whole coc k-up was their own fault. Naturally the families concerned had no cash to repay the money; these are poor families, and they had of course spent, week by week, what they had been told they were entitled to. They were then put under stoppages until the full amount was reclaimed. The level of poverty this reduced some families to was quite disturbing.
Your young man is quite right to be worried. If he is being overpaid, and if the benefit agency find out, he will get nothing at all for a few months until he has squared up the account. What is he supposed to live on meanwhile?
His problem.
The staff in the benefit office will get their own salary fresh and fresh every month. Is not that the important thing?
