Is it neccessary to hand in a coverletter with the resume when I am applying for part time jobs at stores?

Is it necessary, no. However, when submitting a resume – a good cover letter will only increase your chances of being hired. If they didn’t want a resume & cover letter, they would just have you fill out an application. And, it never hurts to have the practice of writing a good cover letter – even if you don’t get hired.
