Which grade should I teach?

Currently, I am getting my BA in Social Science to teach middle school. However, I am thinking about changing degree plans to get my BA in Interdisciplinary Studies to teach elementary.

The reason is because I think there are more jobs available at the elementary level than middle school. Is this correct? I live in South Texas. Yes, I will do some research on it, but I thought while I’m here, I would ask.

Anyone have any experience with this? I wanted to teach history, but am happy to teach younger kids too.

Obviously Joel B. is not a teacher, or else he’d know that elementary school teachers, especially ones who teach KINDERGARTEN, definitely have a lot to accomplish!

I live in South Texas as well (San Antonio) but will begin teaching 2nd grade in Dallas in the Fall. From what I have heard from other educators, middle-school teachers are in high demand, especially if you are certified to teach 5th grade – since a lot of the degree plans in teacher educator programs focus on either EC-4 or 6th-8th grade. I praise you for wanting to teach middle school because I know I could never do it! You said you really want to teach history; therefore, I think it would be best for you to stick with an older grade level (like middle or even high school) where you are required to have minored in a specific subject (like history or english). Don’t choose elementary school just because you think it will be easier for you to get a job. Keep studying what you love and are passionate about, and you will get a job teaching this subject. You will be happier and your students will thank you!

Hope this helps…..
