How General operating funds

General operating money is certainly one of the most difficult to secure funds, mainly because it is much less attractive to the donor. Realistically, the rent is not as sexy as helping people realize their potential as human beings. However, there unrestricted grants out there, if you know where to look.

My first suggestion would be to look at the current list of donors: they are always his list of best prospects for future gifts. Donors for those who have been consistent with those who have built relationships that have a deep trust in their programs now. Supporters which have granted their requests regularly and easily in the past may have the ability to give more if asked. Some of these fans, can give general operating gifts, while others may need some gentle convincing. Do your homework and review their giving guidelines before you apply.

Secondly, always write to the operating costs of the grant program when possible. Most foundations understand that extra programming leads to increased costs indirect (eg electricity, rent, computer use, etc.) and wait to see this line in the budget. Depending on the donor, you can write anywhere from 2% -20% of indirect costs in a program budget.

Third, if you do not have a bigger plan fundraising, Now is the time to make one. Funding for your organization with grants alone is very risky because their funding comes and goes with the whims of the economy. In the fall of the stock market between 2001-2003, many foundations cut or eliminated grant gifts altogether. A good fundraising plan should be diversified and incorporate the income of corporations, individuals, and income generating projects as much as possible, as these funds are limited.

Finally, if all else fails and you are still looking for grants for these funds, in fact there are foundations that such requests. They are limited in number, and competition is hard, so it's a good idea to start with your local area. Some examples:
