What if one cannot gain admission to med school after pre-med?

I am a high-school student planning to study medicine beginning in the fall season. While planning, my parents and I came across the need for me to create a contingency plane in case I fail to enter med school. What are my career options if this should happen?

I was pre-med, applied and didn’t get in. Twice. But I got in the third time, and graduated in the top half of the class — in other words: try, try again. If you want to, that is! Med school admissions can be frustratingly arbitrary.

In the two intervening years, I worked at a doctor’s office for a year to gain more experience, then I volunteered for AmeriCorps for something totally different.

If you decide to do a different career entirely, you’ll be in the same boat as most college students. Which means your opportunities are limitless – scarily so!

I majored in chemistry, which seemed to have more concrete job opportunities post-college than biology did.

Don’t feel pressured to decide your whole life at this point, either. Those two years I took off were invaluable to my life, both as a person and as a doctor.
