Double Major Help! Sociology & Law or Polical Science?

Hey, okay I need some advice.
Sociology is my major right now, I love it — it’s my passion

In the future I want to end up with a career that deals with human rights, equality etc. I’m not sure of a specific title but that sort of general idea. I know sociology is a perfect fit for this.

What I’m thinking is maybe I should do a double major with law or political science, but I’m not sure which would be better for me to take in this situation.

Any ideas?
Also, I have no problems with going to grad school if need be.
Thanks for the answers, those are helpful. I was leaning towards poli sci.

I’m in Canada, I can get an undergraduate degree in Law & Justice at my University. But to go to law school you don’t need a law undergrad. You just need 4-year undergrad.

If you are in the U.S., the first responder is correct. If you want to get a law degree, you will have to go to graduate school. I do not think it could hurt to double major in political science and sociology. However, I do not think that would be necessary if you declare that you are going to graduate school.

Getting a law degree could allow you to go into politics and work on human rights to your heart’s content. However, I think you should job shadow a lawyer in your area of interest to make sure that is what you want to do. Being a lawyer is hard work, high stress, and usually requires long hours. Make sure you want to be one before you make any more investments in your education.

With that being said, there are many other things you could do with a law degree. You do not have to be a practicing lawyer. I hear the “I want to make a difference” undertone in your message. That’s great! We need more people like you. I think you should also consider being some sort of activist. But actvists do not normally make a lot of money. But money is not everything, especially if you love what you do! Maybe you should get involved with a local chapter of ACORN or something similar. Hopefully this will help you make a decision.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.
