I’ve been fired for misconduct – how do I go about job searching?
I was given the option of a resignation or dismissal for downloading torrents at work (i know – stupid thing to do and i’m an idiot, wont do it again!)… I took the resignation.
Been working there for 4 years and it was my first job so its the only thing on my CV apart from GCSE’s and A Levels.
The company told me they wont give a reference so how do I go about searching for new jobs? Any advice on how to approach this matter?
Previously been speaking to recruitment agencies and told them I resigned cos I wasnt happy with my career progress and wanted something closer to home… got 2 references from prestige clients who I previously worked with but no work reference!

If you lie to get your next job, that lie will follow you forever and be part of your permanent work history. Better to just be honest, but don’t tell more than you have to. List the job, and the reason for leaving as simply, “left to seek other opportunities”. Attach copies of the 2 references (don’t lose those, they are gold for you right now) to your CV. If the question comes up in an interview, confess, say you’ve learned a hard lesson and will never do it again. Your other references will speak to your work capability. GL
