The United States is amid a shortage of physicians is expected to intensify as baby boomers age and need for health care grows. Several factors are causing this problem, the declining economy, aging population and, finally, the imminent health care "reform."

It is estimated that up to one third of physicians who practiced today will retire by 2020. There are about 650,000 practicing physicians of all specialties and more than half of them are primary care physicians. There is particular concern about the shortage of primary care in the near future as older doctors retire and younger seek other opportunities for primary care.

American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that there will be a shortage 40,000 primary care physicians (jobs of Family Practice, Internal Medicine jobs, jobs, Pediatric and OB / GYN) in 2020. Added to this shortage is the fact that the number of medical students in primary care as the choice of a profession and has fallen 51.8% since 1997, and that currently only 2% of the graduates of the school of primary care medicine as a career choice. The drop in interest in primary care is likely that a response to wages significantly higher than sub specialists as radiologists and cardiologists are receiving.

Economics and Aging Population

With recession and massive job losses across the country has had a direct impact on the revenue stream for doctors. When the people lose their jobs, but also lose their health benefits and access to healthcare. Obviously, this is most felt in some parts of the country than others, but like most hospitals are part of regional or national chains that are affected by this. This should mitigate short-term shortcomings.

The recent collapse of the stock market has had a major impact on the decisions of older physicians. Many doctors are postponing retirement due economic impact of their retirement savings. But even three to five years' delay will not address the impending loss of experienced doctors. This postponement has resulted in fewer jobs being offered and graduated residents do not find many opportunities as before. Residents rather than commit to jobs less desirable now, are opting for a locum tenens jobs and wait before committing to full time employment. So for the short term, it seems there are good posts less work available.

Health Insurance Reform

Another uncertainty is the result of national health reform. If the reform of the care health really works in increasing enrollment in health insurance then long-term aging population and growing numbers must drive demand for services and therefore more expensive. However, nobody yet knows what will happen with Medicare reimbursement rates. There have been some reduction in rates they pay in radiology that has directly affected the specialty. The question is to be cut morerates affect all specialties.

Due to these and other factors, medical practices, many are holding off any decision until they have a better idea of how the health reform will have an impact reimbursement
