Career Change Teaching: Get On-Board The Elearning Trend

Career changers in the current “great recession” are investigating their options for a career change teaching alternative.  If you came to this article as a private sector professional having lost your job or you’ve suffered cutbacks in pay and benefits, you may be thinking about a second career. A public service job is suddenly popular with a lot of folks impacted by today’s economy who are thinking a teaching position may offer greater job security.

On the other hand, many teaching positions once thought to be stable may be experiencing disruption by the dramatic drop-off in State education revenues. Public school districts are finding their budgets being cut as the tax-base declined with more citizens being unemployed. This has driven cost-cutting measures that have stretched and strained remaining school personnel and forced the closure of some schools across the nation.

This article examines the mid career change teaching opportunities that exist for those with a teaching career background and degree.  Do you have valuable experience in instructing, presenting, planning course structuring and design? Do you possess strong personal relations skills, communication and leadership abilities? If you have any or all of these qualities honed by your years of education training and experience, you already have skills that you can leverage into any number of different career paths.

The career avenue you pursue is really up to your willingness to adapt your career change teaching ideas to the new demands in the marketplace.  The simple realization that there may be as many as 6 – 8 million displaced workers whose previous positions no longer exist gives you an idea of the scope of what I’m referring to.  Many of those idled or unemployed will choose to go back to school.  They will be forced to make a career change themselves or get some sort of additional training to further enhance their hire- ability.  This requires reentering the classroom at some level and within some sort of program offered through an educational institution.

For many, attending an online tutorial program will be the sensible choice.  Most will not be able to afford a full-time student commitment and will choose something they can fit into a lifestyle that includes working a part-time job while upgrading and learning their new, respective, career change teaching programs.  Colleges, universities and educational institutes of every stripe are scrambling to apply their course offerings to an off-campus, online venue.

Instructors willing to take their presenting skills and voice talents into recorded multi-media and interactive 2.0 elearning venues can adapt their careers in teaching to meet the online demand for continuing education by adults and returning students. If your own teaching background kept you constantly upgrading your computer skills to keep apace with the rapid changes in media presentation and interactivity, then you’re not far from entering this exciting and growing field of internet-based career teaching and job training.

Of course this type of change in your professional teaching career would only come after a decision to leave the school district and public education arenas for the private or corporate sector.  If your commitment is strongly dedicated to the education of children and youth, designing or consulting in the production of course curriculum materials using video technology geared to them — is a career change, teaching possibility for you.

The use of screen casting tutorials and online video streaming is an explosive market for the professional instructor and presenter.  Some familiarity with the technical side of the business will give you a competitive edge over your peers who have been hesitant to involve themselves with Internet 2.0 interactive media production capabilities.  Have you got what it takes to become an online facilitator in an elearning environment?  If you’re willing to entertain the notion of upgrading your own technical expertise and learn to hone your auditory presentation skills, you might be just the person to make a career change to teaching online in the new streaming media world.

Giving instruction using webinar and tele/video conference technology has been rapidly evolving.  The educational programs and tutorials using both live and recorded multi media presentations that employs new interactive media with online access represents an enormously lucrative and rewarding career change teaching opportunity.

The production and design of course programs adapted to interactive and/or online educational offerings requires the expertise of those already experienced with live one-on-one or classroom settings.  If you are not the featured instructor or speaker yourself, the need for support personnel in the overall production, formatting and curriculum development that adapts live classroom instruction to a recorded media counterpart is a promising career avenue worth considering.

Whatever your career change teaching alternative turns out to be, I hope you inject enthusiasm and passion into your chosen career path. That way, you can’t help but involve your students with the warm feelings you bring to your subject and everybody gets a charge in the larger quantum field of knowing.  Thanks for sharing!
